Easy Brown Bread Recipe
- 1 1/2 cups boiling water
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 2 Tbl shortening
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 Pkg of active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1/4 cup Brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup Molasses
- 5 - 5 1/2 cups of AP flour
- Melted butter or Margarine
- Combine the first 4 ingredients in a bowl
- allow to cool to warm (110-115 degrees)
- Dissolve the yeast in warm water (separate bowl)
- Add the sugar, then add the oat mixture, molasses, and 3 cups of flour
- add enough flour to make a soft dough
- turn the dough onto a flat surface and knead until smooth (6-8 min)
- place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat both sides
- Cover and allow to rise in a warm place, 1 hour
- Punch the dough down and divide in half; shape into loaves
- Put the loaves into greased loaf pans, cover and allow to rise until doubled (30-45min)
- bake at 375 degrees for 30 -45 minutes or until golden brown
- Cool on a wire rack
